The Core Idea: Course, Speed and Time
Dead reckoning rests on a simple relationship: if you know the direction you have travelled and how far, you can plot your new position. Distance comes from speed multiplied by time, so a boat steering a steady course at six knots for thirty minutes has covered three nautical miles in that direction. Plot that distance along your course line from your last known position, and you have your dead reckoning position.
You repeat this process continuously, updating the estimate each time you change course or speed, or at regular intervals such as every hour. Each new leg is added to the last, building a chain of positions across the chart. The starting point of the whole chain must be a reliable fix, because every dead reckoning position depends on the accuracy of the one before it.
Building the Plot on the Chart
To plot dead reckoning, start at your last confirmed fix and note the time. Draw a line in the direction of the course you are steering, corrected to a true course for the chart, and mark along it the distance you have run since that fix. The point you reach is your dead reckoning position, conventionally marked with a distinctive symbol and labelled with the time.
As the voyage continues you extend this line or begin a new one whenever the course changes. The result is a stepped track across the chart that records exactly how the boat has moved according to your steering and speed. Keeping this plot tidy and up to date means that at any moment you can point to where you believe you are, even without any outside reference.
From Dead Reckoning to Estimated Position
Pure dead reckoning ignores the water and air moving around you, so it describes where the boat would be in perfectly still conditions. In reality, tidal streams carry the boat sideways and wind pushes it downwind through leeway. When you add these influences to your dead reckoning, you get a more realistic result called the estimated position.
To find the estimated position, you draw your dead reckoning line, then from its end you add the tidal stream as a vector, showing the direction and distance the tide has carried you over the same period. Adjusting for leeway shifts the track slightly downwind as well. The estimated position is generally more accurate than raw dead reckoning and is the value you rely on for decision making. Why Errors Accumulate
The weakness of dead reckoning is that every small inaccuracy carries forward and adds up. If your speed estimate is slightly high, or you steer a few degrees off, or the tidal information is imperfect, those errors compound over each successive leg. After several hours without a fix, the gap between your estimated position and your true position can grow uncomfortably large.
This is why dead reckoning and position fixing work as partners. You navigate by dead reckoning between fixes, then each time you obtain a reliable fix, you reset your plot to that confirmed position and continue. The fix wipes out the accumulated error, and dead reckoning carries you forward until the next opportunity to fix arises.

In everyday boating with a working GPS, dead reckoning may seem old-fashioned, but it becomes vital the moment electronics fail, visibility drops, or you move out of sight of land. In fog, for instance, you may have no landmarks to fix on, and dead reckoning may be your only means of knowing where you are and when to expect a hazard.
Practising dead reckoning also builds an instinctive feel for how your boat moves, how far it travels in a given time, and how much the tide affects it.
