Recognising When Fog Is Likely
The forecast is your first line of defence — marine forecasts state visibility explicitly, and “fog” means less than 1,000 metres. But you can also read the conditions yourself. Advection fog is likely when warm, humid air is moving over a notably colder sea, so watch for a small gap between air temperature and dew point.
The dew point is the temperature at which air becomes saturated. When the air temperature and dew point converge to within a degree or two, and there is a source of moisture, fog is imminent. - Sound the correct fog signals required by the collision regulations for your vessel and situation, and listen carefully for others.
- Fix your position and navigate carefully using GPS and chart, plotting a course that keeps you clear of shipping lanes and hazards where possible.
- Switch on navigation lights and, if fitted, use radar and AIS to detect other vessels early.
- Wear lifejackets and brief the crew, since a collision or grounding can happen suddenly.
If you can safely anchor in shallow water clear of traffic and wait for the fog to lift, that is often the wisest choice of all. Crossing a busy shipping lane in thick fog is one of the most dangerous things a small craft can do; avoid it if you possibly can.
Preparing Before You Leave the Dock
