GPS and Chartplotter Basics for Boaters
Learn how GPS and chartplotters work, how to read your position, speed and course, set waypoints, and why you should never rely on electronics alone at sea.
Satellite navigation has transformed boating. A modern GPS receiver can tell you where you are within a few metres, anywhere in the world, at any time of day, in any weather. Paired with a chartplotter, which displays that position on an electronic chart, it gives even a beginner a powerful picture of their situation. Understanding how these tools work, what they show, and where their limits lie is now an expected part of boating exams and everyday seamanship.
Yet electronics are aids to navigation, not replacements for it. The best skippers use a chartplotter alongside traditional skills, treating the screen as one source of information among several. This guide covers the essentials of using GPS and chartplotters wisely.
How GPS Works
GPS, the Global Positioning System, relies on a network of satellites orbiting the Earth. Each satellite continuously broadcasts a precisely timed signal. Your receiver listens to several satellites at once and calculates its distance from each one based on how long the signals took to arrive. With signals from at least four satellites, it can work out your position and altitude.
The result is a latitude and longitude, updated every second or faster. Because the system is passive, meaning your receiver only listens and never transmits, it works for an unlimited number of users at once and gives no away your position to anyone else. Other satellite systems now supplement GPS, and many receivers use several networks together for improved reliability.
Reading Your Chartplotter
A chartplotter overlays your GPS position onto an electronic chart, showing your boat as an icon that moves in real time. Around this it displays a set of numbers that describe your motion. The most important are your position in latitude and longitude, your speed over the ground, and your course over the ground, which is the actual direction you are travelling relative to the seabed.
Notice that course over the ground can differ from the heading your compass shows, because tide and wind push the boat sideways. This difference is extremely useful, because it reveals at a glance whether you are being set off your intended track. Learning to read speed and course over the ground, and to compare them with your compass heading, is one of the quickest ways to sharpen your navigation.
Waypoints and Routes
A waypoint is simply a marked position stored in the plotter, defined by its coordinates. You can drop a waypoint on a buoy, a harbour entrance, or any point you want to reach. The plotter then tells you the bearing and distance to that waypoint and, as you travel, how long until you arrive at your current speed.
Linking several waypoints together creates a route, an electronic version of the passage plan you would draw on a paper chart. The plotter guides you leg by leg, showing cross-track error, which is how far you have strayed from the straight line between waypoints. The Limits of Electronics
For all their power, electronic aids can fail, and a good navigator plans for that. Power can be lost, screens can be damaged by water or vibration, software can freeze, and the underlying electronic charts can contain errors or be out of date just as paper charts can. Signal problems, though rare, are possible, and a plotter is only as good as the chart data loaded into it.
There is also a subtler danger: over-reliance. It is easy to follow the little boat icon on the screen and stop looking at the water, the marks, and the paper chart. This is how boats run aground with a perfectly working plotter aboard. Treat the plotter as one voice in the conversation, always cross-checked against your own observations.
Using Electronics and Traditional Skills Together
The safest approach blends old and new. Use the chartplotter for continuous position and quick answers on speed, course and distance to go, but keep a paper chart marked with your plan and note your position on it at intervals. That way, if the electronics fail, you can carry on navigating from your last known position using dead reckoning and visual fixes.
Set the plotter up thoughtfully before departure: load the correct charts, check they are current, configure sensible alarms for shallow water and cross-track error, and confirm the position it shows matches a known landmark. A little preparation ashore makes the electronics far more trustworthy at sea, and combining them with traditional skills makes you a complete navigator.
FAQ
What is the difference between course over the ground and heading? Heading is the direction the boat is pointing, read from the compass. Course over the ground is the direction the boat is actually travelling relative to the seabed, as measured by GPS. Tide and wind cause the two to differ, and the gap tells you how much you are being set off track.
Can I rely on my chartplotter alone? No. Electronics can lose power, fail, or use out-of-date chart data, and following the screen blindly can lead you into danger. Always keep a paper chart and the skills to navigate without electronics as a backup.
What is cross-track error? Cross-track error is the distance you have drifted sideways from the straight line between two waypoints. A small value means you are following your planned route closely; a growing value warns that tide, wind or a steering error is pushing you off course.
