Latitude and Longitude Explained for Boaters

Understand latitude and longitude, how to read coordinates on a chart, and why one minute of latitude equals a nautical mile. A clear guide for your boating exam.

Every point on the surface of the sea can be described by two numbers: its latitude and its longitude. Together these form a global grid that lets a navigator in any country pinpoint an exact position and communicate it precisely, whether reading it off a chart, entering it into a GPS, or passing it over the radio in an emergency. Understanding this coordinate system is fundamental to navigation and appears on virtually every boating exam.

The good news is that the system is logical and consistent. Once you understand how the grid is built and how to read the scales on your chart, working with coordinates becomes straightforward and quick.

The Grid: Parallels and Meridians

Imagine the Earth wrapped in two sets of lines. The first set runs horizontally around the globe, parallel to the Equator, and these are the parallels of latitude. The second set runs vertically from pole to pole, and these are the meridians of longitude. Any position is defined by the intersection of one parallel and one meridian.

Latitude measures how far north or south you are of the Equator, ranging from 0 degrees at the Equator to 90 degrees at each pole. Longitude measures how far east or west you are of the Prime Meridian, which passes through Greenwich near London, ranging from 0 to 180 degrees. Every position therefore carries a direction label: N or S for latitude, E or W for longitude.

Reading Degrees, Minutes and Seconds

Coordinates are not whole numbers alone, they are subdivided for precision. Each degree is divided into 60 minutes, and traditionally each minute into 60 seconds. Modern navigation more often uses degrees, minutes and decimals of a minute, for example 51 degrees 28.6 minutes north, which is written 51 26.6’ N. Knowing which format your instruments use prevents costly mistakes.

To read a position from a chart, you find the parallel and meridian nearest your point, then measure the fractional distance to the next one using the scales printed along the chart’s edges. Latitude is read from the vertical scales on the left and right sides, and longitude from the horizontal scales along the top and bottom. Always state latitude first, then longitude, and never forget the N/S and E/W labels.

Why Latitude Gives You Distance

There is a special and extremely useful relationship built into this system: one minute of latitude equals exactly one nautical mile. This is because latitude divides the globe evenly from pole to pole. As a result, whenever you need to measure distance on a chart, you use the latitude scale on the side of the chart, at roughly the same height as the line you are measuring.

Longitude cannot be used this way. Because the meridians converge as they approach the poles, the real-world distance covered by one minute of longitude shrinks the further you are from the Equator. This is why the longitude scale should never be used to measure distance. Remembering this single rule prevents one of the most common navigation errors.

Plotting and Communicating a Position

To plot a given coordinate on a chart, work in two steps. First, use dividers or a plotting instrument to step off the latitude from the vertical scale and draw a light line along that parallel. Then measure the longitude from the horizontal scale and mark where it crosses your latitude line. That intersection is your position.

When communicating a position by radio, especially in an emergency, read it slowly and clearly, degrees first, then minutes, then the hemisphere. Common Pitfalls to Avoid

The most frequent mistakes are mixing up the scales, forgetting the hemisphere labels, and confusing minutes with decimal degrees. Another trap is transposing the two numbers, giving longitude before latitude, which can place your reported position hundreds of miles from where you actually are.

Slow, deliberate reading beats speed every time. Double-check the format on your chart and instruments, confirm the hemispheres, and always sanity-check whether the resulting position falls somewhere sensible for your voyage.
