A lifejacket is the simplest and most effective piece of safety equipment you can own, yet it is widely misunderstood. People confuse buoyancy aids with lifejackets, wear them loosely, or store inflatable jackets for years without checking them. Knowing the differences and how to use a lifejacket correctly can be the difference between surviving time in the water and not.

Lifejacket Versus Buoyancy Aid
These two terms are often used interchangeably, but they do different jobs.
A buoyancy aid provides flotation to help a conscious person who can swim to stay afloat. It does not turn an unconscious person face-up. Buoyancy aids are popular for dinghy sailing, kayaking and other activities where you expect to be in the water and want freedom of movement.
A lifejacket provides more buoyancy and, crucially, is designed to turn an unconscious or exhausted person onto their back so their airway stays clear of the water. If there is any chance of being unable to help yourself in the water, a true lifejacket is what you want.
Understanding Buoyancy Ratings
Lifejackets are commonly described by their buoyancy in newtons (N). The rating tells you roughly how much support the jacket provides and the conditions it suits.
- 50N (buoyancy aid): For competent swimmers close to shore or help, in sheltered water. Will not turn you face-up.
- 100N: For relatively sheltered waters. Offers some turning capability but may not reliably turn an unconscious person wearing heavy clothing.
- 150N: A general-purpose offshore lifejacket. Designed to turn most people face-up, even in foul-weather clothing, in a range of conditions.
- 275N: For offshore and extreme conditions, or where heavy clothing and gear reduce the effectiveness of lower ratings.
Higher is not always better in every situation, but for coastal and offshore boating a 150N jacket is a sensible default for most adults. Consider the clothing you will wear, since bulky waterproofs and boots add weight that a jacket must overcome to turn you.
Foam Versus Inflatable
Lifejackets come in two broad constructions, each with trade-offs.
- Inherently buoyant (foam) jackets are always ready, need no maintenance of gas cylinders, and cannot fail to inflate. They are bulkier and can restrict movement, which makes people less inclined to wear them.
- Inflatable jackets are comfortable and low-profile when deflated, so people wear them more willingly. They inflate automatically on immersion or manually by pulling a toggle, and can be topped up by mouth. The catch is that they depend on a charged gas cylinder and a working firing mechanism, so they must be serviced.
For children, weak swimmers and anyone who might struggle to trigger an inflatable, foam jackets are often the safer choice because they cannot fail to work.
Fitting and Wearing It Correctly
A lifejacket only works if it is worn and fitted properly. A loose jacket can ride up over your face or slip off entirely in the water.
- Choose the correct size and weight range. Never put an adult jacket on a child; use child-specific sizes.
- Fasten all buckles and tighten the straps so the jacket is snug but not uncomfortable. You should not be able to pull it up over your chin.
- Use the crotch or thigh straps if fitted. Without them, buoyancy can push the jacket up and off in the water.
- Consider a jacket with a crotch strap, spray hood and light for offshore use. A spray hood keeps water off your face in rough seas, and a light helps rescuers find you.
The best lifejacket is the one you will actually keep on. Wearing it becomes a habit when it is comfortable and when everyone on board does the same.
Maintenance and Checks
An unmaintained inflatable lifejacket may not inflate when you need it. Build in regular checks.
- Before each season, inspect the fabric, straps and buckles for wear.
- For inflatables, check the gas cylinder is fully screwed in and not corroded or already fired, and confirm the automatic firing head is in date.
- Periodically inflate the jacket by mouth and leave it overnight to confirm it holds air.
- Have inflatables professionally serviced at the interval the manufacturer recommends.
- Rinse jackets in fresh water after use in salt water and dry them fully before storage.
