The Hull and Its Directions
The hull is the body of the boat, the watertight shell that keeps you afloat. Before naming its parts, it helps to fix the basic directions. The front is the bow, the back is the stern. Facing forward, the right-hand side is starboard and the left is port. The full length runs from bow to stern, and the width at its widest point is the beam.
Along the hull you will meet a few key features. The gunwale is the upper edge where deck meets side. The cockpit is the sunken area where the crew sits and steers. Below, the cabin or saloon provides shelter and accommodation on larger boats. The waterline marks where the hull meets the surface, and everything below it is underwater when the boat sits level.
Below the Waterline: Keel and Rudder
Beneath the hull sit two crucial appendages. The keel is a heavy fin projecting downward, and it does two jobs at once. Its weight keeps the boat upright and stops it capsizing when the wind heels it over, and its flat blade resists sideways slippage through the water, which is what allows the boat to sail toward the wind rather than sliding away from it. On small dinghies the keel is replaced by a lighter, retractable centreboard or daggerboard that does the sideways-resistance job while the crew’s weight provides the stability.
At the stern hangs the rudder, a movable blade that steers the boat. It is controlled either by a tiller, a simple lever you push and pull, or by a wheel connected to it by cables or hydraulics. Turn the rudder and the flow of water pushes the stern sideways, swinging the bow onto a new course.
The Rig: Mast, Boom and Standing Rigging
Rising from the deck is the mast, the tall vertical spar that holds the sails aloft. It is held firmly in place by the standing rigging, a set of strong wires that do not move in normal sailing. The wires running to the sides are the shrouds, keeping the mast from falling sideways; the wire running forward to the bow is the forestay, and the one running back to the stern is the backstay. Together they keep the mast standing under the considerable loads the sails impose.
Attached to the mast at roughly deck height is the boom, a horizontal spar running toward the stern. The bottom edge of the mainsail attaches along the boom, which controls the sail’s angle and keeps its shape. Because the boom swings across the boat during turns, it is also the part crew must watch most carefully.
The Sails
The two most common sails on a beginner’s boat are the mainsail and the headsail. The mainsail is the large sail set behind the mast, attached along the mast and the boom. The headsail, often called a jib or genoa, is set forward of the mast, running down to the bow along the forestay. Working together, these sails catch the wind and generate the power that drives the boat.
Each sail has named edges and corners. The leading edge, nearest the wind, is the luff; the trailing edge is the leech; and the bottom edge is the foot. The corners have names too: the tack at the bottom front, the clew at the bottom rear, and the head at the top. Knowing these lets you follow trimming instructions precisely.
Running Rigging: The Ropes That Do the Work
If the standing rigging holds the mast up, the running rigging is the set of ropes you actively handle to control the sails. Sailors call ropes with a job “lines.” Halyards are the lines that haul the sails up the mast. Sheets are the lines that control the angle of the sails to the wind: the mainsheet trims the mainsail, and the jib sheets trim the headsail. Other control lines adjust sail shape more finely, but halyards and sheets are the ones you will use constantly.
