Position Fixing Methods Every Boater Should Know

Discover how to fix your position at sea using bearings, transits, ranges and GPS. Learn to cross position lines for a reliable fix and pass your boating exam.

Knowing exactly where you are is the foundation of safe navigation. A position fix is a point on the chart that you can trust as your current location, established from independent observations. While GPS now provides fixes automatically, a competent skipper must understand the traditional methods too, both because electronics can fail and because examiners expect it. This guide explains the main ways to fix a position and how to judge how much to trust each one.

The core idea behind almost every method is the position line: a line drawn on the chart along which you know your boat must lie. A single position line is not enough to pinpoint you, but where two or more position lines cross, that intersection is your fix.

Position Lines from Compass Bearings

The most common way to build a position line is to take a compass bearing on a charted object, such as a lighthouse, a distinctive headland or a buoy. You point your hand-bearing compass at the object, read the bearing, correct it from compass to true, then draw a line on the chart through the object in the reverse direction. Your boat lies somewhere along that line.

A single bearing gives one position line. Take a second bearing on a different object and draw its line too, and where the two cross is your fix. A third bearing adds confidence: if all three lines pass through the same point, you have an excellent fix; if they form a small triangle, known as a cocked hat, your true position lies within it and you should treat the situation cautiously.

Transits: The Most Accurate Line

A transit is created when two charted objects appear directly in line with one another, one behind the other. At the moment they line up, you know you are somewhere on the straight line that joins them on the chart, extended out to seaward. Because a transit relies only on your eyes and not on any compass, it is free of compass error and is often the most accurate position line available.

Transits are also invaluable for checking that you are staying on a safe line into a harbour, or for detecting whether the tide is setting you sideways. Many harbour entrances provide official leading marks or lights arranged as a transit precisely for this purpose. Whenever a natural transit is available, use it.

Ranges and Distances Off

A position line can also be a circle rather than a straight line. If you can measure your distance from a known object, you know you lie somewhere on a circle of that radius centred on the object. Distance can be estimated in several ways, for example by the dipping range of a light as it rises over the horizon, or by the vertical angle a tall object of known height subtends.

Combining a distance off with a bearing to the same object gives an instant fix: the bearing gives the direction and the range gives how far along it you are. This is a quick and effective method when only one prominent landmark is visible, and it is well worth practising in the boatingexamine course alongside the bearing methods.

Fixing with GPS and Cross-Checking

GPS provides a continuous fix in latitude and longitude, and under normal conditions it is highly accurate. The wise navigator, however, never treats a single source as infallible. The best practice is to cross-check the electronic position against a traditional fix whenever a good opportunity arises, such as passing a buoy or lining up a transit.

If the GPS position and your visual fix agree, your confidence in both rises. If they disagree, you have discovered a problem early, while you still have time to investigate. This habit of independent cross-checking is what separates careful navigators from those who simply follow a screen.

Choosing Good Objects and Timing Your Fixes

The quality of a fix depends heavily on the objects you choose. Pick charted features you can identify beyond doubt, and space your bearings so the position lines cross at a wide angle, ideally between 60 and 90 degrees. Lines that cross at a shallow angle produce a fix that is very sensitive to small errors.

Timing matters too. When taking several bearings, observe the object changing bearing most slowly first, usually the one nearest ahead or astern, and the fastest-changing object, usually one abeam, last, so that all the readings represent nearly the same instant. Note the time of each fix on the chart, because your fixes become the anchor points from which you carry your dead reckoning forward.

What is a cocked hat and what should I do about it? A cocked hat is the small triangle formed when three position lines do not meet at a single point, caused by minor errors in the bearings. Your true position lies within or near it. Treat the corner nearest any danger as your working position, and take a fresh fix to reduce the uncertainty.

Why is a transit more accurate than a compass bearing? A transit uses only your eyes to line up two objects, so it carries no compass error from variation or deviation. As long as you correctly identify the two marks on the chart, the resulting position line is extremely reliable.

How many position lines do I need for a fix? Two crossing position lines give a fix, but three are much better because they reveal errors. If three well-chosen lines meet at a point, you can trust the fix; if they form a large triangle, something is wrong and you should re-check your bearings and identifications.
