Reading a Nautical Chart: A Beginner's Guide
Learn to read a nautical chart step by step, from symbols and soundings to scale and the compass rose, so you can navigate safely and pass your boating exam.
A nautical chart is the single most important document on any boat. Unlike a road map, it does not just show you where you are and where you want to go, it warns you about everything hidden beneath the surface, from shallow banks and submerged rocks to the safe channels that will carry you home. Learning to read one confidently is a core skill for every boating exam and, more importantly, for staying safe on the water.
This guide breaks the chart down into its essential parts. Once you understand what each symbol, number and line is telling you, a chart stops looking like a confusing tangle of markings and becomes a clear conversation between the cartographer and you.
What a Nautical Chart Actually Shows
A chart is a top-down representation of a body of water and the coastline around it. The land is usually shown in a pale yellow or grey tone, while the water is graded in shades of blue and white. As a general rule, the darker the blue, the shallower the water; white areas represent deeper water where a boat can pass safely.
Coastlines, harbours, buildings used as landmarks, lighthouses and prominent features are all marked so you can match what you see on the water to what appears on paper. The chart also carries a huge amount of text: the title block tells you the area covered, the scale, the units used for depth, and the vertical and horizontal datums the chart is based on. Always read the title block first, because a depth in metres reads very differently from one in fathoms or feet.
Understanding Depths and Soundings
The small numbers scattered across the water are soundings, the charted depth of the water at that exact point. These are measured relative to a reference level called chart datum, which is usually set close to the lowest tide the area normally experiences. This is deliberately cautious: on most days you will have more water beneath you than the chart shows, not less.
Underlined soundings, or numbers shown with a special symbol, indicate drying heights, areas that are underwater at high tide but exposed at low tide. Contour lines join points of equal depth, allowing you to see the shape of the seabed at a glance and to spot where the water shallows quickly. Learning to scan soundings and contours together lets you judge safe water before you ever get close to danger.
Symbols, Abbreviations and Colours
Charts use a standardised set of symbols so that a navigator anywhere in Europe can read a chart from another region. You will see symbols for buoys, beacons, wrecks, anchorages, and the nature of the seabed, such as “S” for sand or “M” for mud, which matters when choosing where to drop an anchor.
Lights are described with abbreviations that tell you the colour, the pattern and the timing of the flash, for example “Fl R 5s” meaning a red light that flashes once every five seconds. Scale, Distance and the Compass Rose
Every chart is drawn to a scale, expressed as a ratio such as 1:50,000. A large-scale chart covers a small area in great detail and is used for harbours and approaches, while a small-scale chart covers a wide area with less detail and is used for passage planning. Choosing the right scale for the job is part of good seamanship.
Distance at sea is measured in nautical miles, and one nautical mile corresponds to one minute of latitude. This is why you always measure distance using the latitude scale on the vertical edges of the chart, never the longitude scale along the top and bottom. The compass rose, printed in one or more places on the chart, shows both true north and, on many charts, magnetic north, allowing you to read and plot bearings accurately.
Putting It Together on the Water
Reading a chart is not a one-time task, it is an ongoing habit. Before departure, identify your route, the hazards along it, the depths you will cross and the marks you will pass. Underway, keep relating the real features around you back to the chart so you always know roughly where you are.
Remember that charts can become out of date as buoys move and depths change, so only use up-to-date, official charts and keep them corrected. A chart is only as reliable as its most recent update.
FAQ
Why is distance measured using the latitude scale and not longitude? Because one minute of latitude always equals one nautical mile, the latitude scale gives a true distance. The spacing of longitude lines changes with your position on the globe, so measuring distance along them would give inconsistent results.
What does chart datum mean for the depths I see? Chart datum is a low reference level, usually near the lowest expected tide. Charted soundings are measured from it, so on a typical day you will have extra water above the charted depth thanks to the tide. Always add the tidal height to the sounding to get the actual depth.
Are electronic charts different from paper charts? The underlying information is the same, and the symbols follow the same standards. Electronic charts add convenience and live position, but you still need to understand what the symbols and soundings mean, and prudent navigators keep a paper backup.
