Preparing a small boat to sail follows a sensible order. First you step the mast if it is not already up, securing the shrouds and stays so it stands firm. Next you attach the sails: the mainsail is fed onto the mast and boom, and the headsail is clipped to the forestay. You then attach the halyards to the head of each sail, ready to hoist, and lead the sheets back to the cockpit so they run cleanly without tangles or knots.
Before hoisting, it is worth a final check that nothing is twisted, that all shackles are done up, and that lines run free. Sailors usually hoist the mainsail while pointing the boat into the wind so it flaps rather than filling and pulling the boat away prematurely. Only when everything is set and the crew are ready do you bear away and let the sails fill.

A rig under load is only as strong as its weakest fitting, so regular inspection matters.
