Understanding Depth Soundings on a Chart

Learn how to read depth soundings and contours, what chart datum means, how tide affects real depth, and how to use an echo sounder to stay off the bottom safely.

The numbers scattered across the blue areas of a nautical chart are among the most important information it carries. These are soundings, the charted depths of the water, and reading them correctly is what keeps your boat off the bottom. Depth is not a fixed thing, though, because the tide raises and lowers the sea, so understanding soundings means understanding the reference they are measured from and how to combine them with the tide. This is a core navigation topic and a frequent subject in boating exams.

Depth also affects far more than simply avoiding grounding. It influences where you can anchor, which channels you can use, and how much margin of safety you have when passing over shallow ground. This guide explains how to read and use the depth information on your chart with confidence.

What Soundings Represent

Each sounding is the depth of the water at that precise spot, measured downward from a reference level. On a chart in metric units, a sounding of five means five metres of water below the reference at that point. The soundings are spread across the chart so you can build a mental picture of how deep the water is throughout an area.

Some numbers appear underlined or marked in a special way. These indicate drying heights, places that are covered by water at high tide but exposed at low tide. A drying height is expressed as how far the seabed rises above the reference level, so a boat must take great care near these areas and cross them only with sufficient tide. Always check the units stated in the chart’s title block, because a value in metres, feet or fathoms means very different things.

Chart Datum: The Reference Level

Soundings are measured from a reference level called chart datum. To be cautious, chart datum is set near the lowest level the tide normally reaches, so that the charted depth is close to the least water you are ever likely to find. In practice this means the sea is usually deeper than the chart shows, which errs on the side of safety.

Because the tide almost always adds water above chart datum, the true depth at any moment is the sounding plus the height of tide at that time. This single calculation is one of the most useful in coastal navigation. Getting into the habit of adding the tidal height to the charted sounding, rather than trusting the raw number, prevents groundings on a falling tide.

Depth Contours and the Shape of the Seabed

Individual soundings tell you the depth at points, but depth contours join points of equal depth into lines, revealing the shape of the seabed. Where contours are far apart, the bottom shelves gently; where they crowd together, the depth changes quickly, warning of a steep bank or the edge of a channel.

Contours are a powerful safety tool. By choosing a contour that gives you a comfortable margin over your draught and staying on its deep side, you can navigate a safe path even without a precise fix. Watching your echo sounder as you cross known contours also serves as a rough check on your position, since a sudden change in depth may confirm you have reached a charted feature.

Using the Echo Sounder

The echo sounder, or depth sounder, measures the water beneath your boat in real time by timing an acoustic pulse to the seabed and back. It is an invaluable instrument, but you must know exactly what it is measuring. Some sounders show depth below the keel, some below the transducer, and some are set to show total depth from the waterline, so always check how yours is configured.

Comparing the sounder reading with the charted depth plus the height of tide gives a continuous check that you are where you think you are. A reading that suddenly disagrees with your expectation is a warning worth heeding immediately. Putting Depth Knowledge to Work

Before a passage, study the soundings and contours along your route and identify the shallowest points you must cross. Work out the height of tide at the time you expect to be there, add it to the charted depth, and confirm you will have enough water with a margin to spare. If not, you may need to delay until the tide rises or choose a deeper route.

When anchoring, use the soundings to find a spot with a suitable depth for your boat and enough scope of anchor cable, remembering that the tide will rise and fall while you are there. Thinking in terms of depth at all times, and always relating the chart to the tide and your sounder, is the mark of a careful and safe navigator.
